INTERDISCIPLINARY AND TRANSLATIONAL MEDICINE INTERNSHIP TRAINING PROGRAM

In this post-genomic era, the massive amount of biological information has greatly advanced the medical research. Translational medicine, also referred to as translational science or translational research, is a rapidly developing biomedical discipline that attempts to build a bridge between laboratories and clinical application. The ultimate goal is to accelerate research innovations transforming into clinical needs, including new health products, medications, and theranostic methods, or to solve existing health problems through basic research.

Interdisciplinary and Translational Medicine Internship Training Program aims to provide participants with insights into ground-breaking research and to develop interdisciplinary capacity in the field of translational medicine. The course is divided into three parts:

(1) Professional lectures covering
• The principles of translational medicine
• The potentials of translational research in new medicines
• Basic knowledge of medical-related research, from molecular biology, drug design, preclinical development to clinical trial

(2) Laboratory internship

Participants need to choose one faculty member from TMU’s Translational Medicine Program to be the coach of their research project. The participants will be trained in basic laboratory skills and safety issues and given guidance on experimental design, data handling, and statistical analysis. At the end of internship, the participants will be required to conduct an oral presentation to share their work in public.

(3) Industrial and biomedical institutional visit

To broaden the view and knowledge of translational medicine, the program will arrange a series of visits to industries and biomedical institutions. Participants will learn how research institutes and biotech companies work together in Taiwan to bridge the basic research to clinical use. The institutions may include:

• The TMU core facility accelerating translational research
• Bio-Asia International Conference and Exhibition
• Welgene Biotech Co.

• National Synchrotron Radiation Research Center (NSRRC)
